Geese

There are so many geese up here! The other day as I was driving through town, a family of geese were crossing the road and I had to stop as they passed. The goslings were pretty big compared to the other families I have seen so far, almost teenagers.
Last week when I was driving back to Milwaukee, I drove through the Horicon Marsh and saw TONS of goose families along the highway! If you ever have the chance, take Highway 33 through the Horicon Marsh (but drive slowly!) because there is so much wildlife, the highway has become part of the ecosystem! There were at least 7 or 8 goose families right along the blacktop, some crossing, others keeping their children in line.
I have also seen cornfields full of geese, at least 150 geese all congregated together in one! I didn't realize they were such social creatures, and I wonder what they are thinking or talking about during these goose conventions. The above picture goes along with this idea (although you can't clearly see them on this page), as there are five separate goose families swimming along with one another! Do you think they are all related (like, all the Momma ducks are sisters?) or are they just good goosey pals?

Solo Cookout

Last night, i decided to have a fire in Dad's fire pit, and tried out his grate by cooking hot dogs and an ear of corn! He was out at Grandma Jo's, so Auree and I set to work alone gathering firewood from the yard and his wood scraps from the workshop. Many of the pieces were too long for the metal bin, and so it took a good half hour before we could set the grate down and start cooking! By then, the fire was nice and hot and my clothes smelled like smoke.

This is a photo of the dog and corn on the grill!
My finished dog!

The bugs weren't bad at all, and it wasn't until near sundown that the mosquitoes emerged and I had to hurry and get everything put away. It was a mad dash, running in the food supplies and quickly hosing off the fire pit before running inside myself! Earlier in the day, Auree and I had tried to lay on the dock, but the wind was too loud and spooky for him so that was short lived. I went down later and took these shots.

This last photo is a view from the pier looking up at Dad's house. In the water is an old, holey boat that was frozen in the ice all winter and now just lingers eerily on the lake's edge. You can see the chimney and part of the roof on Dad's house, but overall he has a pretty private location from the water.

Step One: The Move

My summer adventure has officially begun. Yesterday I handed over the keys to my apartment in Milwaukee and am mostly settled in at Dad's! Travis and I finished cleaning and moving most of the stuff to the car on Tuesday night, but had to come back Wednesday to do the last few odds and ends. It ended up pouring which kind of sucked (especially for the picnic planned for later that day!) but we got it done and I appreciate all the help he gave. To the right is a photo of my apartment building, taken as we were driving away for the last time in the rain!

My new job is going well so far. I started on Monday and learned h
ow to clean the bathrooms, take campsite reservations, vacuum the pool, test pool water...the list goes on. At any rate, I won't be bored doing the same hum-drum task everyday. My new co-workers and managers are all very friendly and this summer should be a blast (for all the blast that can be had scrubbing bathrooms and pool floors!) This weekend is Memorial Day and the place is going to be packed, and hopefully I will remember to take some photos and post them.

In other news, the Auree and the rats are content at Dad's house, Auree loves sitting outside and there is an abundant amount of wildlife for him to wa
tch! Today he sat in the sunshine and watched me haul boxes and so forth from the garage- what a life! This is him dozing on our new bed. >>

Next week I will be meeting the Marquette County Historical Society folks and will surely have something interesting to post about that! You can click here to visit the Marquette County website and see some of what I will be working with this summer, the links at the bottom take you to various exhibit and building information.

Let the Adventures Begin!

I have decided to BLOG about my upcoming life adventures as there are many to be had in the months to come!

First of all, I will be moving to Montello, WI in approximately 1 1/2 weeks. That move in itself may be an adventure worth noting, but after that I will begin work at a campground in Montello! This summer is sure to wield many interesting things, a list of possible adventures will follow. Then in August, Travis and I are moving to Kansas! A trip and life choice that will sure contain much to write about. Anyway, below is a list of things I will be doing (hopefully) this summer, and will then (hopefully) blog about on here.

1. Volunteering with the Marquette County Historical Society!
2. Volunteering with the Oxford animal shelter!
3. Exploring all that Montello has to offer (which isn't a whole lot.)
4. Taking a trip to Kansas to look at apartments.
5. Various hikes and nature walks.
6. Bike trips!
7. Checking out all the (interesting-looking) churches in Marquette Co.
8. Buying a car! And car insurance!
9. Visiting Madison, Milwaukee and Algoma.
10. Fishing and/or dancing with Dad.

The list is sure to change and grow as time goes on, but I figured I would write down what I had so far as to not forget!

At any rate, Finals are nearly upon us and I must get back to work. Hopefully if I leave this as a bookmarked page I will be forced to update it regularly.

Hooray Life!
